Role-playing games, where choices do the heavy lifting

Role-playing games let you step into a character and carry the story with your decisions. Sometimes that means careful planning, sometimes it means talking your way out of trouble, and sometimes it means watching a dice roll behave like it has opinions. In our catalog, the range runs from Akalabeth: World of Doom to 868-BACK, with plenty of quests, systems, and strange worlds in between.

What defines the genre

At the heart of role-playing games is the act of taking on a role inside a fictional setting. You make choices for one or more characters, and those choices shape what happens next. Many RPGs use rules to decide whether actions succeed or fail, while others lean harder into story and character development. The form stretches from tabletop discussion to live action play, and into digital games that focus on quests, progression, and statistical growth.

Where to start in our catalog

If you want a quick tour through the shelves, try Alpha Protocol for a modern take, Albion for an older PC adventure, and ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery) if you like your role-playing with a side of danger and persistence. A.I.M.: Artificial Intelligence Machine, Against the Moon, and Against the Moon: Prologue show how broad the genre can be, while Al-Qadim: The Genie's Curse and Abaddon: Princess of the Decay lean into stranger worlds. We also have 8-Bit Adventures 2: Demo, A Maiden Astrologer Divines the Future, and Alphadia I & II, because sometimes the appeal is simply seeing what kind of life a game wants you to live.

FAQ

What is a role-playing game?

It is a game where you take on the role of a character in a fictional setting. The point is not just to act, but to make decisions that shape the story, usually within a rule system that helps decide what succeeds and what fails.

Are all role-playing games the same kind of experience?

No. The genre includes tabletop games, live action role-playing, and digital role-playing games. Some focus on storytelling and character interaction, while others put more weight on quests, combat, or character progression over time.

Do role-playing games always need combat?

No. Combat can be part of them, but it is not what defines the genre. The key idea is roleplay, character choice, and a structured setting, whether the game is about negotiation, exploration, or building a character over time.

What should I look for first in your catalog?

Start with the names you already know, then follow the odd ones that sound like they escaped from a wizard’s notebook. Alpha Protocol, Albion, ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery), Against the Moon, and Al-Qadim: The Genie's Curse are all good places to begin browsing.
