Fantasy

Fantasy games, where the impossible gets to wear a crown

Fantasy games lean into magic, supernatural forces, and worlds that do not need to obey ordinary history or nature. That makes room for sorcerers, strange creatures, and settings built from pure invention. In our catalog, the genre stretches from Akalabeth: World of Doom to A Tragedy in Elvish, with plenty of castle-storming and spell-slinging in between. It is a big shelf, 435 games strong, and it runs from 1980 to 2026.

What fantasy is doing when it is doing its thing

Fantasy is built on imaginative worldbuilding. It often borrows from folklore and mythology, but it does not have to. The key idea is simple enough, if a little mischievous, the story can ask you to believe in magic, impossible creatures, or whole realms that never existed outside the page or screen. That freedom is part of the appeal, and it is why fantasy can feel so roomy. One minute you are in a kingdom, the next you are arguing with a genie, or a wizard, or both.

Because fantasy is allowed to be impossible, it can throw open the doors for adventure, strategy, and drama without apologising for any of it. That makes the genre easy to recognise and hard to exhaust. It can be grand, strange, solemn, or gloriously over the top. The point is not realism. The point is to build a world that can hold a spell, a prophecy, or a very determined hero with a suspiciously large sword.

Where to begin in our catalog

If you want a place to start, the catalog gives you a useful spread of eras and styles. Age of Wonders 2: The Wizard's Throne, Age of Wonders 3, and Age of Wonders 4 show how the series keeps returning to magic and empire. Against the Storm and Against the Storm Demo take a different route, while A Game of Thrones: The Board Game brings a familiar fantasy world into a board game form. Then there is Al-Qadim: The Genie's Curse, Alien Nations, and Absolute Tactics: Daughters of Mercy Demo, each offering its own flavour of wonder.

You can also move backward and forward through the genre’s history without leaving the list. Akalabeth: World of Doom is there from 1980, while A Tragedy in Elvish reaches into 2026. Between those points sit games like A Tale of Two Kingdoms, 8-Bit Adventures 2: Demo, and Absolver. The result is a catalog with real range, not just another line of cloaked figures and glowing runes, though yes, there is some of that too.
