Neo Geo CD

Neo Geo CD, SNK's compact arcade detour

Neo Geo CD takes the punchy arcade spirit of the Neo Geo and hands it over on disc, with all the promise and the waiting that implied. SNK released it in 1994 as a home console built around the same hardware family as the cartridge system, but aimed at cheaper software. In our catalog you will find 128 games from 1990 to 2024, which means the library stretches from early Neo Geo favorites to later Pixelheart releases, with plenty of familiar names in between.

What the Neo Geo CD is

The Neo Geo CD was SNK's disc based version of the Neo Geo, first shown at the 1994 Tokyo Toy Show and released on September 9, 1994. It used the same CPU setup as the arcade and cartridge systems, so conversions were a central idea from the start. The machine came with a control pad rather than a joystick, though it could still use AES controllers. It was also known for long loading times, which is the sort of detail nobody forgets in a hurry.

Production of Neo Geo consoles ended in 1997, but software continued to appear and be backported by the Neo Geo MVS until 2004. The platform's life was short in hardware terms, yet it left behind a distinct catalogue built around arcade style design. In practical terms, that means a library full of games that were made to be fast, direct, and very sure of what they wanted from you.

Where to start in our catalog

If you want a quick way in, start with the names that keep turning up in conversation around the system. Aero Fighters 2, Aero Fighters 3, Aggressors of Dark Kombat, Alpha Mission II, Andro Dunos, Art of Fighting 2, and Art of Fighting 3 all show the range nicely. You will also find 2020 Super Baseball, ADK World, Art of Fighting, and the 2024 releases Andro Dunos Neo Geo CD (Pixelheart) and Bang2 Busters Neo Geo CD (Pixelheart).

The catalog is shaped above all by SNK, with 69 games, followed by ADK with 16, Visco Corporation with 8, Video System Co., Ltd. with 5, and Saurus with 4. That mix tells you what the platform does best, arcade born action, shooters, sports, and fighters that waste no time pretending to be polite. If you like your menu screens and your muscle memory to do the talking, this is a very usable place to begin.
