Sony Playstation 3, where the big discs and bigger ideas lived

Sony Playstation 3 arrived as Sony’s follow-up to PlayStation 2, with a launch window that ran from 2006 into 2007 depending on region. It is a home console from the seventh generation, built around Blu-ray, HDMI, and a machine that wanted to do rather a lot at once. Our catalog gives you 226 games from 2006 to 2015, so there is plenty here beyond launch chatter and hardware ambition.

What the PlayStation 3 is

The PS3 was Sony Computer Entertainment’s home video game console, first released in Japan on November 11, 2006, then in North America on November 17 and in Europe and Australasia on March 23, 2007. It used the custom Cell Broadband Engine processor, launched with the PlayStation Network, and could output games in 1080p. Later revisions, the PlayStation 3 Slim and Super Slim, kept the same basic idea in a smaller shell.

It sat across from Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii, and it did so with a strong taste for technical muscle. Blu-ray was its primary storage medium, which mattered for both games and the format wars around it. That is a very console way to make a point, but Sony did make it.

Where to start in our catalog

If you want a familiar place to begin, start with Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, and Assassin's Creed III. For a different mood, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Army of Two, and 007: Legends show how varied the system’s catalogue can be. There is also Alice: Madness Returns, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, and 3D Dot Game Heroes, which sounds like a joke until you realise it absolutely is not.

You will also find Angry Birds Trilogy, Anarchy Reigns, Armored Core: For Answer, and Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland (Limited Edition). The platform’s busiest developers in our catalog include Capcom, Insomniac Games, Ubisoft Montreal, Bandai Namco Entertainment, and Naughty Dog Software, so if you like a studio habitually returning to the same hardware, there is plenty to browse.
