Mac OS

Mac OS games, from classic to modern

Mac OS has been around long enough to gather a strangely satisfying spread of games, from early curiosities to modern releases. Our catalog holds 173 of them, with years stretching from 1970 to 2023. That means you can wander from old-school oddities into familiar names without leaving the platform behind. Apple’s desktop line changed a lot over the years, but the games keep the same invitation, click in, poke around, and see what survives the trip.

What Mac OS is

Mac OS began as Apple’s original Macintosh system software, then grew into the modern macOS family. The classic version was known for being friendly to use, while the newer system brought a very different architecture and the Unix base Apple built after buying NeXT. Both share the tidy Mac habits players know, the menu bar at the top, the Finder, and those overlapping windows that never quite stay where you expect them to. Very on brand.

If you like platform history with your games, Mac OS has plenty of it. In our catalog, the names behind the library include Grant Ojanen's Creations with 12 games, Maxis with 8, Bungie with 6, and Aspyr and Firaxis Games with 3 each. That mix alone hints at the range here, from experimental bits and pieces to big, recognizable releases. The system may have changed, but the back catalog keeps turning up surprises.

Where to start in our catalog

A few familiar titles make good first stops if you want a feel for the range. Try 10000000 for a more modern edge, or go older with A-Train, Abuse, and AD&D Dragonlance Vol. III: The Dark Queen of Krynn. If you want bigger names, Age of Empires, Age of Empires III, Anna, and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood are all here, alongside curiosities like Alien Pig Blaster and Apple Magic Collection 1. That is the nice thing about a long-running platform, one minute you are sorting trains, the next you are dealing with dragons.

You can also dip into Around the World in 80 days, Arcade Classics For Macintosh, or ArmA: Cold War Assault if you want another angle on the catalog. The appeal is less about one fixed style and more about the way Mac OS kept attracting different kinds of games across decades. Some are familiar series entries, some are little time capsules, and some sound like they were named after a dare. Which is often a good sign.
