Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo 3DS, where handhelds got a new dimension

The Nintendo 3DS is a foldable dual-screen handheld from Nintendo, released from early 2011 and built to follow the Nintendo DS and DSi. It keeps the clamshell shape, plays Nintendo DS software, and adds autostereoscopic 3D without glasses. In our catalog, you will find 244 games from 2011 to 2015, which is enough to keep your thumbs busy and your backlog mildly judgmental.

What the Nintendo 3DS is

The 3DS arrived as an eighth-generation console and sat across from Sony’s PlayStation Vita in the handheld contest of the era. The family also grew over time, with the Nintendo 3DS XL in July 2012, the Nintendo 2DS in October 2013, and the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL from October 2014. Nintendo discontinued the line on September 16, 2020, but the system’s library is still very much alive in spirit, cartridge slot and all.

What to play first in our catalog

Start with the names that still get a reaction. Try Animal Crossing: New Leaf for quiet routine with a mischievous edge, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy for jets and clean skies, and 3D Classics: Kid Icarus, 3D Classics: Excitebike, 3D Classics: Kirby's Adventure, or 3D Classics: Xevious if you want familiar classics with a 3DS twist. Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?!!, Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON'T KNOW!, Angry Birds Trilogy, Angry Birds Star Wars, Aero Porter, AiRace Speed, Alien Chaos 3D, and American Mensa Academy show how varied this library can be, sometimes in ways that make perfect sense and sometimes in ways that only handheld gaming can explain.
