A 2020 open-world RPG in Night City, with first-person combat, life paths, and a single-player campaign on Windows and macOS.

Overview

Cyberpunk 2077 is a 2020 action role-playing game set in Night City, a dystopian metropolis in California. You step into V’s shoes, a cybernetically enhanced mercenary tangled in a fight with Johnny Silverhand and Arasaka Corporation. Built in first person, it keeps character build choices right at the heart of play.

You shape V’s voice, appearance, background, and attributes, then choose one of three life paths: Nomad, Street Kid, or Corpo. Those paths alter the starting location, prologue, clothing, and dialogue options. Combat and stealth both fit the design, with hacking, cover, movement upgrades, cyberware, and non-lethal options all on the table.

Night City is divided into seven regions, including City Center, Watson, Westbrook, Heywood, Pacifica, Santo Domingo, and Dogtown. The game arrived on Windows in December 2020 and is also available on macOS. Steam lists single-player support, controller support, adjustable difficulty, and several accessibility options.

Beginner walkthrough

Pick a life path

Start by choosing Nomad, Street Kid, or Corpo. Each one defines V’s background, starting location, prologue mission, and initial clothing, and it also opens up unique dialogue options tied to that history.

Build around your preferred style

The two main play styles are Netrunner and Solo. V can be shaped through five attributes: Body, Intelligence, Reflexes, Technical Ability, and Cool. The later Phantom Liberty expansion adds a sixth attribute, Relic.

Use movement and cyberware in combat

V can sprint, take cover, double-jump, and slide. Many of those abilities can be unlocked or upgraded through cyberware installed by a ripperdoc, so the build system and movement system pull together nicely.

Choose your weapons carefully

Equipment is sorted by tier and split into melee and ranged options. Ranged weapons come in Power, Tech, and Smart types, each with its own behaviour. The game also supports non-lethal play, with options for weapons and cyberware.

Key characters

  • V Player character

V is a cybernetically enhanced mercenary whose background, appearance, and build can be customized.

  • Johnny Silverhand Voice in the biochip

Johnny Silverhand is the engram inside V’s biochip, and his presence drives the game’s central conflict.

  • Arasaka Corporation Major megacorporation

Arasaka is the powerful corporation standing in the way of V’s survival.

Our take

Pros

  • Deep character customization
  • Distinct life paths and dialogue
  • Flexible combat and hacking options
  • Strong accessibility and controller support on Steam

Cons

  • Single-player only
  • Requires 70 GB of storage
  • SSD required for minimum and recommended specs

Cyberpunk 2077 is a large, systems-heavy RPG with a striking setting and plenty of build flexibility. The life paths give the opening some shape, while Night City does a fine job of making itself felt. Its Steam feature set is generous too. It is still a single-player game with fairly demanding hardware requirements, so it asks for a proper PC setup.
