Sega Genesis

Sega Genesis, where arcade muscle met couch-time chaos

The Sega Genesis is a 16-bit home console with a long, busy life and a habit for making a scene. It arrived in Japan as the Mega Drive, then in North America as the Genesis, and it ended up with a library that runs deep across action, sports, shooters, and odd little curiosities. If you like your games with sharp edges and a bit of swagger, this is a platform worth wandering through.

What the Sega Genesis is

Sega built the Genesis around arcade-minded hardware, and you can feel that influence in the way it was aimed at quick reactions and punchy action. It is Sega's third console, the successor to the Master System, and its catalog stretches from 1986 to 1997 in our collection. The machine also had its share of add-ons and regional variants, which is very on brand for a system that never quite did plain and simple when it could do extra hardware instead.

What it is known for, and where to begin

The Genesis is known for arcade ports, Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog series, sports games, and a catalog that does not sit still for long. In our library, you can start with Altered Beast, After Burner II, Alien Soldier, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, and Aerobiz Supersonic. Then move on to Advanced Busterhawk Gley Lancer, B.O.B., Art Alive, Batman Forever, and Bass Masters Classic: Pro Edition. If you want something stranger, Ballz 3D: Fighting at Its Ballziest is waiting to make its point, loudly.
