Sony Playstation, the era of hungry polygons

Sony Playstation arrived with a long tail of history and a very busy catalog, 918 games strong in our collection, spanning 1994 to 2004. It is the home console brand that helped make PlayStation a household name, and its library still feels wonderfully of its moment, all sharp angles, CD-ROM swagger, and the occasional experimental oddity. There is plenty to dig through here, from quick arcade conversions to huge series that kept coming back for more.

What this platform is

Sony Playstation is the home console line launched by Sony Interactive Entertainment, starting with the first PlayStation released in Japan in 1994 and worldwide the following year. The brand grew into a major part of gaming, with later consoles, handhelds, online services, and a distinct identity built around DualShock controllers and those famous face buttons. In our catalog, the range runs from 1994 to 2004, which gives you a neat slice of the platform’s most active years, minus the dust and the nostalgia filters.

The machine’s identity was shaped by a strong push into 3D graphics, and that shows in the games people still talk about. Sony Playstation became known for a broad mix of first-party titles and releases from major publishers, with Capcom, Namco, Squaresoft, Konami, and Psygnosis Limited showing up often in our catalog. That variety is part of the fun, one minute you are in a racer, the next you are staring down a flight sim, a platformer, or a sports game with far too much personality.

Where to start in our catalog

If you want an easy way in, begin with names that tell the story of the platform’s range. 007: Racing, 007: The World Is Not Enough, and 007: Tomorrow Never Dies bring the license-heavy side of the library. 40 Winks and 100% Star show the platform’s brighter, weirder edge. For speed and rivalry, try 2Xtreme and 3Xtreme, then turn to Ace Combat 2 and Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere when you want the sky to get a little crowded.

You can also head toward A-Train if you like systems that ask for patience, or Action Bass if you are in the mood for something more unusual. 3D Baseball and 3D Lemmings [Long Box] sit neatly beside them, which is very PlayStation, really, a catalog that can go from arcade energy to careful planning without asking permission. The fun is in wandering. With 918 games here, you are never far from another rabbit hole.
