Sega Master System

Sega Master System, 8-bit and unapologetic

Sega Master System is Sega’s 8-bit home console, first released in Japan in 1985 and then rolled out in other regions over the next few years. Our catalog holds 249 games for it, spanning 1985 to 1998. It arrived as a rival to the NES, and while the odds were never exactly polite, it still built a library with enough personality to keep you digging. Think cartridges, Sega Cards, and the occasional accessory making a very specific promise.

What the Master System is

The Master System began as an export version of the Sega Mark III, then took on a life of its own. The original model used cartridges and Sega Cards, while later redesigns trimmed things down to cartridge only. Sega also offered accessories such as a light gun and 3D glasses for specially designed games. It sold best in some markets outside Japan and North America, which is a neat way of saying this machine did not go quietly.

In our catalog, the platform’s strongest presence comes from Sega, Sega R&D2, Sanritsu, Taito Corporation, and SIMS Co., Ltd. That mix helps explain the range you see here, from arcade-style action to sports and licensed oddities. The Master System may have had a smaller library than its main rival, but it certainly did not lack for distinct ideas, or for games that look like they have had one too many late nights in an arcade basement.

Where to start in our catalog

If you want a sensible starting point, begin with Alex Kidd in Miracle World, then follow it with Alex Kidd in Shinobi World and Alex Kidd: BMX Trial. After that, try Action Fighter, After Burner, Alien Syndrome, and Alien Storm. If you want something a little stranger, ALF, Agi Gongyong Dooly, and Air Rescue all have their own flavor, even before you reach Ace of Aces, Aerial Assault (USA), Alien 3, and Andre Agassi Tennis.

Those names give you a decent cross-section of what the Master System does well in our catalog. There is arcade energy, there are action games, there are sports, and there are licensed curiosities that deserve a second look. It is the sort of platform where you can jump from a jet fighter to a tennis court to a surreal alien crisis without needing to change your sense of humor.
