Nintendo 64

Nintendo 64, where cartridges met big ideas

The Nintendo 64 is the console that made room for thumbsticks, four controller ports, and a lot of bold ideas in one squat gray machine. Nintendo’s third major home console arrived in Japan in 1996, then North America and Europe in 1996 and 1997. Our catalog holds 759 games for it, stretching from 1970 to 2026, which is a suitably odd span for a system that still feels unmistakably mid 1990s.

What the Nintendo 64 is

The Nintendo 64, or N64, was developed and marketed by Nintendo as a home video game console. It used cartridges instead of discs, a choice that helped with loading times but made life harder for many third-party developers. That left Nintendo leaning on its own series and on partners like Rare, Ltd. The hardware also brought 3D graphics into living rooms with a separate graphics and sound coprocessor, plus accessories such as the Expansion Pak, Rumble Pak, and Controller Pak.

What to play first in our catalog

If you want the N64 in a nutshell, start with 001 Pokemon Stadium, 002 Pokemon Stadium 2, 1080° Snowboarding, 007: The World Is Not Enough, and 007: World Is Not Enough [Gray Cart]. They show off the system’s variety, from arena battles to snow-covered speed runs and spy work with a rather fondness for loud alarms. You can also dig into 003 Dragon Ball Kart, 19XX, 64 de Hakken! Tamagotchi Minna de Tamagotchi World, 64 Hanafuda: Tenshi no Yakusoku, and 64 Oozumou for a broader tour of the library.
