Xbox Series X

Microsoft Xbox Series X, the sharp-edged Xbox generation

Microsoft Xbox Series X sits in Microsoft’s fourth generation of Xbox hardware, launched on November 10, 2020. It arrived with a clear split, Series X at the higher end, Series S beside it, and both leaning into faster loading, better visuals, and the sort of backward compatibility that lets older favorites keep a seat at the table. In our catalog, the system spans 196 games, with release years from 1970 to 2025.

What Xbox Series X is

Xbox Series X belongs to the ninth generation of consoles and uses an AMD x86-64 APU, solid-state storage, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, spatial audio, Auto HDR, HDMI 2.1 variable refresh rate, and low-latency modes. It was designed to nominally render at 2160p and 60 FPS. The console also supports nearly all Xbox One-compatible games and accessories, plus Xbox 360 and original Xbox games that were already backward-compatible on Xbox One. Microsoft also pushed Smart Delivery, which helped publishers offer upgraded versions of Xbox One titles for Series X/S. A tidy arrangement, even if the naming feels like it escaped from a filing cabinet.

What to start with in our catalog

If you want a sense of what this platform gets up to, begin with Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Back 4 Blood, Assetto Corsa Competizione [Day One Edition], and Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX. You will also find Assassin's Creed Valhalla [Ragnarok Edition], Assassin's Creed: Valhalla [Collector's Edition], Assassin's Creed: Valhalla [Ultimate Edition Steelbook], Among Us [Ejected Edition], and Apple Watch simulator. That mix tells the story well, from large-scale action to odd little detours that sound like they were named during a very long meeting.
