Nintendo GameCube

Nintendo GameCube, compact, colourful, and very much a game machine

Nintendo GameCube is Nintendo’s sixth generation home console, a compact box with a handle, mini discs, and a library that still has plenty of personality. In our catalog you will find 926 games from 2001 to 2011, with familiar names from Nintendo, Capcom, Konami, and Sonic Team turning up often. It is a system that arrived with a clear job, play games, and mostly ignored anything that looked like a DVD menu.

What the Nintendo GameCube is

The GameCube launched in 2001 and took over from the Nintendo 64, arriving in Japan, North America, Europe, and Australia across 2001 and 2002. It uses proprietary 8 cm MiniDVD based discs and memory cards, and its controller is famous for its unusual shape and pressure sensitive triggers. Nintendo also offered extras like the WaveBird Wireless Controller, the Game Boy Player, and link and network adapters, because apparently one cable was never quite enough.

Unlike its rivals, the standard system was built for games only, with no standard DVD movies or CD audio. That focus gave it a very specific feel. Small hardware, a distinct controller, and a strong run of exclusive software made it easy to recognise, even if the lack of multimedia tricks left it looking slightly stubborn compared with the competition.

What it is known for, and where to start in our catalog

The GameCube is remembered for a mix of Nintendo staples and sharp third party additions. Retrospective praise often lands on Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Mario Sunshine, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Resident Evil 4, Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion, Animal Crossing, and the Metroid Prime subseries. In our catalog, the range runs from action, racing, and platforming to licensed tie ins and bundle releases, so there is plenty to browse if you like variety with a slightly mischievous streak.

If you want a starting point, try 007: NightFire, 007: Everything or Nothing, 007: From Russia With Love, 1080: Avalanche, 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker, 2 Games in 1: Der SpongeBob Schwammkopf Film + Tak 2 der Stab der Träume, or 2 Games in 1: Findet Nemo + Die Unglaublichen. These names show the spread nicely, from slick spy action to snowbound racing and oddball double bills. That is GameCube in a nutshell, cheerful, eclectic, and not remotely afraid of a long title.

FAQ

How many GameCube games are in your catalog?

Our catalog currently lists 926 Nintendo GameCube games, with release years running from 2001 to 2011. That gives you a long stretch of the platform’s life, from its launch era through later additions that kept the library active well after the console’s main commercial run.

What kind of hardware was the GameCube?

It was Nintendo’s home video game console built around proprietary 8 cm MiniDVD based discs and external memory cards. The standard system was designed for games only, so it did not play standard DVD movies or CD audio. The controller, with its staggered sticks and pressure sensitive triggers, became one of its defining features.

Which developers appear most often in the catalog?

The developers with the most games in our catalog are Nintendo with 46, Capcom with 39, Nintendo EAD with 35, Konami with 31, and Sonic Team with 24. That mix gives the platform a strong core of first party and partner projects, which is handy when you want both familiar faces and a few surprises.

Where should I begin if I want well known GameCube names?

A good place to start is with Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Mario Sunshine, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Resident Evil 4, and Pikmin. In our catalog, you can also jump into 007: NightFire, 007: Everything or Nothing, or 1080: Avalanche if you want something a little more genre specific.
