Sega CD

Sega CD, where discs brought extra baggage and a few classics

The Sega CD, known as Mega-CD in most regions outside North America and Brazil, sits on the Genesis as a CD-ROM add-on with a taste for bigger storage and louder ambitions. It plays CD-based games, audio CDs, and CD+G discs, and it adds a faster CPU plus custom graphics hardware for scaling and rotation. In our catalog, you will find 246 games, stretching from 1970 to 2020, with a library that swings from curiosities to the names people still bring up over lunch.

What the Sega CD is

Released first in Japan in 1991, then in North America in 1992 and elsewhere in 1993, the Sega CD was Sega’s answer to the CD-ROM wave. It was built for the Sega Genesis and sold as a way to give cartridges more room to breathe, since CDs offered far more storage than Genesis cartridges. That extra space helped open the door to FMV games, for better or worse, and to all the odd experiments that follow when hardware suddenly has room to show off.

It was also meant to keep pace with rivals like the PC Engine CD-ROM² System, while adding hardware support for sprite scaling and rotation. The result is a machine with a very specific personality, part console add-on, part audio player, part time capsule. The library reflects that split. Some games chase spectacle, some lean on established series, and some simply seem determined to prove that a CD could be used for almost anything if a publisher tried hard enough.

Where to start in our catalog

If you want a feel for the range, begin with Sonic CD, Lunar: The Silver Star, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Popful Mail, and Snatcher. Those are the names that tend to surface when people talk about the system’s strongest identity, and they sit alongside plenty of other notable entries in our catalog. You can also follow the trail through 3 Ninjas Kick Back, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Eye of the Beholder, After Burner III, AH-3 Thunderstrike, and Android Assault: The Revenge of Bari-Arm, depending on whether you want action, role-playing, or the sort of arcade energy that makes the hardware sound like it is clearing its throat.

For a broader tour, try A-Rank Thunder Tanjouhen, A/X-101, Aisle Lord, Alshark, Anett Futatabi, and Arcus 1-2-3. The catalog also includes 240p TestSuite Sega Mega-CD, which sounds less like a game and more like a piece of evidence. Sega appears most often here, followed by Digital Pictures, Core Design Ltd., Wolf Team, and Game Arts, so if a familiar developer name catches your eye, there is probably something worth a detour.
